In 1998 Centra Health opened the Johnson Health Center to provide comprehensive health care for anyone in the Central Virginia region. Walk-ins and uninsured persons are welcome on an ability to pay plan. The Johnson Health Center became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in 2003, providing comprehensive out-patient services, offering laboratory, x-ray, prescription assistance, mental health - substance abuse, OB-Prenatal and outreach services. The Johnson Health Center is staffed with four physicians and four family nurse practitioners serving in excess of 15,000 patients with 31,000 patient encounters
On July 1, 2005, the agency dedicated the James River Dental Clinic in Madison Heights with a dentist and dental hygienist to provide dental services including Medicaid patients in the City of Lynchburg and surrounding counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell. The dental clinic serves in excess of 1,800 patients with 3,500 patient encounters.
The Johnson Health Center and the James River Dental Clinic are generously supported by the Centra Health Foundation and Virginia Health Care Foundation. The Medical Clinic is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 7:30 AM -1:00 PM providing access to medical care in the Central Virginia area. The James River Dental Clinic is open 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday-Friday. The Johnson OB-Prenatal Clinic is open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday-Thursday. Johnson Pediatrics is open from 7:30 AM to 4 PM.
On March 1, 2006, the Johnson Health Center opened its new OB-Prenatal Clinic in Lynchburg serving the unassigned, uninsured, and Medicaid patients, staffed with professional medical providers covering the Central Virginia area. The obstetric services provide a valuable medical resource to pregnant women and patients unable to afford private care. In calendar year 2006, over 1000 women received vital prenatal services through the OB Clinic with almost 30% being uninsured and the remainder receiving Medicaid assistance. This service is kindly supported by Centra Health and the birthing deliveries occur at VA Baptist Hospital located on Rivermont Avenue in Lynchburg. The Johnson's OB-Prenatal Clinic is located in Lynchburg at 407 Federal Street, and is staffed by a mid-level OB Nurse Practitioner and a clinically trained support staff.
