“My career at Johnson Health Center spans nearly 21 years and reflects a journey of growth, opportunity, and commitment to healthcare operations. I began at the front desk and advanced through referrals and billing, progressing from Billing Coordinator to Billing Supervisor, then Associate Director of Revenue Integrity, and now Director of Revenue Cycle Management.
Throughout my career, Johnson Health Center has invested in both my professional and personal growth through robust training and leadership development opportunities. I earned my Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential through AAPC, along with certifications as a Community Health Certified Billing Specialist (CH-CBS) and a Certified Provider Enrollment Specialist (PESC). I also participated in the Community Health Center Leadership Institute (2015–2016) and graduated from the Leadership Lynchburg Program in 2020. In addition, I have attended national conferences and specialized training, including NACHC, eCW, and multiple revenue cycle bootcamps.
Equally important, these experiences strengthened my ability to lead with empathy, communicate effectively, and build strong, collaborative teams. The education, mentorship, and opportunities provided by Johnson Health Center have shaped not only my career, but the leader and person I am today. “I will celebrate 10 years with JHC in May of 2026. After moving back to Virginia from Florida, where my husband served in the U.S. Air Force, I began my career at JHC in the call center. I later advanced to the OB/GYN front desk and then to the Referrals department, where I worked for five years. During this time, I had the opportunity to collaborate with providers, nurses, and other staff across Johnson Health Center, which gave me a strong understanding of clinic operations and effective problem-solving.
This experience prepared me well for my current role in the IT department, where I have proudly supported staff for the past 3 years. I participated in the Community Health Center Leadership Institute from 2016–2017, which further strengthened my leadership and professional development. Supporting our staff allows me to contribute to the quality of care and compassion our patients experience every day.”

“I started as a Medical Assistant extern in May 2024. After my externship, I never left. (HAHA!) I have had the pleasure of seeing JHC grow from probably 20 staff members in one location to over 250. I started working in both clinical and front office. I moved to mostly clinical after a short time. I have delved in many aspects of JHC before landing in HR such as referrals, billing, and finance. Gary guided me to the HR realm as an assistant around 2013. From that point, I felt I found where I was supposed to be. I have accomplished growth in that field including gaining my SHRM-CP certification. I have been able to attend employment law trainings and conferences related to our HRIS to gain knowledge to help me grow.”

Winter Tanner joined Johnson Health Center in January of 2014. Upon the completion of college to be a Medical Assistant, Winter immediately accepted a front desk position at another medical office as Certified Healthcare Access Associate III. She was quickly promoted to front desk lead before being recruited to work at JHC. Winter started with JHC as a front office closer working 10am-7pm before her promotion to Lead Patient Assistance Specialist at Atherholt pediatrics. She later transferred to Lead Patient Assistance Specialist of our immediate care office in Amherst County. In 2019, Winter was promoted to Associate Director of Patient Access and was very recently appointed to Associate Director of Family Medicine and Behavioral Health Operations. We are proud to share that Winter is an inaugural 2024 graduate of our JHC Leadership Academy program while completing the 2024 Leadership Amherst program through the Amherst County Economic Development Authority. Winter attributes her growth and dedication to the JHC mission, vision and core values that keep her motivated. Thank you, Winter for serving our JHC community over 12 years. We look forward to many more years to come!
“I have been with Johnson Health Center for eight years. I began starting off in a new career; previously I was in the arts and education without any prior clinical experience. I started off in the front office and then moved into a lead role in the front office, then the lead for the call center, until where I am now; a Business Intelligence Coordinator. Johnson Health Center has provided leadership opportunities like the Leadership Academy and helping me obtain Google Certifications to provide me with a strong foundation to flourish in my duties.
