Certified Clinical Medical Assistant

Johnson Health Center, in partnership with the CVCC Workforce Development Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Program prepares graduates to sit for the NHA Medical Assistant Certification Exam and to work typically in medical offices, clinics, urgent care centers, and may work in general medicine or specialty practices. The program is designed to prepare students to be professional Medical Assistants, as multi-skilled allied health care professionals that specialize in procedures commonly performed in the ambulatory health care settings. Students will learn to perform both clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

This class will cover theory, in-class practice, and Basic Life Support American Heart Association CPR training. Students will practice skills in the classroom and during clinical rotations for real-world experiences and while earning relevant experience to begin a rewarding career.

 

Students will be exposed to a multitude of medical and administrative tasks to include:
  • Checking patients in and out upon arrival and departure
  • Answering phone calls and questions
  • Assisting providers with exams and procedures
  • Administering injections or medications
  • Working in the electronic health record (EHR)
  • Performing EKG, phlebotomy, and laboratory procedures
  • Taking patient vital signs

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) class will train students to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an AED. This class is specifically designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills.

The course will cover the essentials of career readiness with SkillsUSA Career Essentials classes (personal, workplace, technical, leadership, and communication skills) in partnership with Adult Education of Central Virginia. Students will explore career paths, refine resumes, and prepare for career interviews.
